Midlothian Sure Start is a dynamic, award winning voluntary Organisation.  It offers a quality support service to families with children up to age 10 across Midlothian.  Midlothian Sure Start has been in existence since 2001 and employs over 80 members of staff providing a service in six family support centres.  Our ethos is to provide a holistic, confidential community based service where Project Users are at the heart of the service.

With a passion for working with young children and a strong understanding of pre-birth to three framework and Building the Ambition, the successful candidate will be responsible for supporting children aged 0-3 in a nurturing environment, working in partnership with families to give children the best start in life.

We are currently looking to recruit the following post

Centre Manager on a 35 hours per week permanent contract based in one of our six centres based in Midlothian.

Salary Scale 30-33, £26,894-£29,363 + Pension

THE ROLE

  • To plan and oversee the delivery of services to families in the local area, in a non discriminatory manner
  • Monitor and evaluate the service on a regular basis, providing update reports to the Line Manager
  • Recruit, manage and appraise staff/volunteers, providing staff development and training opportunities
  • Manage the day to day finances and administration of the local service
  • Liaise with other locally based managers to share practice and contribute to the development of Midlothian Sure Start
  • Provide relevant support and guidance to families when needed in a 1-1 or group setting
  • Support staff and families in developing a centre which provides a warm and friendly atmosphere
  • Conduct an initial referral meeting with referred families which may include a home visit
  • Liaise with a full range of relevant professionals in Social Work, Health, Education and Voluntary agencies, in order to coordinate services for families and to raise awareness of the project
  • Keep abreast of developments in childcare and take part in research activities as required
  • Ensure the Early Years Practitioners provide play opportunities that are appropriate to the development needs of children and that child protection procedures are implemented
  • Arrange weekly staff meetings
  • Manage the accommodation and maintain safety in all areas

THE PERSON

  • This post requires a person who has the ability to communicate effectively with children, parents, students, colleagues and staff from other agencies
  • You must be able to use your own initiative, have a level of creativity, have self-direction and also self-awareness
  • You must have a sound knowledge and understanding of the needs of families with young children
  • You must have sound experience in working in group situations and have an understanding of group processes
  • You must have skills in working with parents in building up their self-esteem and confidence
  • You will be expected to be flexible whilst making the most of opportunities as they arise
  • You must be able to operate as a team member

REQUIREMENTS

  • A BA in Childhood Practice or a PDA level 9 or commitment to working towards
  • You must have experience of working with young children
  • Experience working with families in both group and individual settings
  • You must register with the SSSC and work towards any qualifications that you may required to carry out
  • You must also either hold a valid Child Protection Certificate or commit to undertake Child Protection training
  • You will need to have a satisfactory PVG Certificate
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills are essential
